#JWLV – Rio Tinto’s "Diamonds With A Story" Part 1 – the Glamour #LUXURY #JCK2013

One of the best bits of information, for me, to come out of LUXURY was the news that Rio Tinto would be retaining it's Diamond Companies, and has, in fact expanded on their "Diamonds With A Story" campaign.

According to it's description on JCK Marketplace: Rio Tinto is one of the world’s major diamond producers through our 100 per cent control of the Argyle mine in Australia, 60 per cent share of the Diavik mine in Canada, 78 per cent interest in the Murowa mine in Zimbabwe and 100% ownership of the Bunder Project in India. All of our diamond operations are committed to making a positive contribution towards sustainable development, with our stewardship interest focused on the exploration, production and sales of rough diamonds.
A little recent history - Rio Tinto owns a majority stake in three major Diamond Mines - the most productive of which is the Argyle mine, famous for it's fancy brown, pink and red diamonds. Earlier this year, Rio Tinto announced that it would be selling off it's Diamond Division...then in a reversal they announced that it has decided to “retain its diamonds businesses after concluding a strategic review which considered a range of options, including potential divestment.”
In a quote from Anthony DeMarco's blog on Jewellery Net Asia:
“The medium to long-term market fundamentals for diamonds remain robust, fuelled by growing demand for luxury goods in Asia and continuing strong demand in North America,” said Rio Tinto Diamonds & Minerals chief executive Alan Davies. “We have valuable, high-quality diamonds businesses that are well positioned to capitalise on the positive market outlook. After considering a number of alternative strategic ownership options it is clear the best path to generate maximum value for our shareholders is to retain these businesses.”

At the 2012 LUXURY show in Las Vegas, Rio Tinto introduced the "Diamonds With A Story" campaign in an effort to educate buyers, manufacturers, and consumers about the origins of Rio Tinto diamonds. Armed with information from a Shand Group research project, the company indicated that more than three quarters of consumers care about where their diamond is from and how it is mined.
“The four Cs are still important, however for today’s consumer we need to go further and explain the other layers which are the human, geological, and cultural histories wrapped up in every Rio Tinto diamond,” Jean-Marc Lieberherr, general manager for the sales and marketing of diamonds of Rio Tinto mines, said in a statement to JCK's Jennifer Heebner.

This year, in a statement to Centurion Editor Hedda Schupak, Bruno Sane, general manager of marketing for Rio Tinto Diamonds, said, "Diamonds With A Story is the umbrella signature of our global market development initiatives in both established and emerging markets. It is also recognizes that diamonds are not commodities, that every diamond has a story worth telling which consumers are keen to hear.”

Carrying that product one step further - this year at LUXURY the mining giant introduced ...the rest of the story!
Rebecca Foerster, US vice president at Rio Tinto Diamonds, talked about the new chapter of their campaign as "inspiration to the industry"...she explained that today's younger consumer isn't looking for the bling factor - they really want the "story" of their stone.

How does Rio Tinto seek to inspire?

...four new, unique diamond stories—Shaped by Origin, Cutting Impact, Mixed Medium, and Color My World.
Press and Designers gather in the Rio Tinto Booth at LUXURY - the four distinct new stories is visible above our heads
At their annual Press Event at LUXURY, they showed how these stories could inspire. Rio Tinto engaged 8 designers to address a specific story and those collections were for sale to Retailers attending JCK & LUXURY.

According to Forester: . “The hope is that retailers will be interested in showcasing these collections in stores, since the designers brought the stories to life, and for others to be inspired to make their own beautiful jewelry based on these themes.”

The always charming and very competent hand orchestrating the many facets of this event was the Industry's favorite Spokeperson, Michael O'Connor

Using diamonds sourced from Rio Tinto’s Argyle mine in Australia and Diavik mine in Canada these designer pieces were chosen because of their unique representation of the company's initiative.

Shaped By Origin concentrates on the origins of Rio Tinto's stones and the company's projects in the regions it mines - represented by designer Zoltan David's Dreamcatcher Collection, from the Aboriginal, Dreamtime. This very elegant tribal look of a blackened Stainless Steel open structure set with Argyle Diamonds on a rose gold backing the color of Australia's red earth, spoke to the Maori people, indigenous to Australia's Outback and the location of the Argyle Mine.

Zoltan David was joined in this category by the effervescent Shelly Purdy, the designer is as sparkling as her Royal Collection utilizing Canadian Diamonds from Rio Tinto's Diavik mine...

...and Belgian company, Casa Gi whose rugged, masculine collection will have every man wearing diamonds!

Mixed Media this category really proved that these were NOT your Grandmother's Diamonds, presenting Diamonds in some of the many diverse media that Designers are creating in today!  Beautifully represented by Kara Ross of Kara Ross New York, LLC, her work with Diamonds in Concrete (the obviously diverse dichotomy of the materials represented the streets of New York) and in Wood was a collection of bold and forward thinking pieces.

Cutting Impact  plays up sustainability and ethical issues - emphasizing company projects in the regions it mines...this category was represented by Alexandra Hart's Pure Flight Collection...the designer's own blog features a 5 part write up of her journey with this collection.

....and Phyllis Bergman of Mercury Ring - as the co-founder of the Diamond Empowerment Fund, being chosen in this category is, I would imagine, dear to her heart.

Color My World is the heart and soul of the Argyle Diamonds - natural colored diamonds from this location range from champagne to cognac and pale pinks to reds...Rio Tinto mines have also produced Silvermist.   Representing color was Kristin Hanson whose Skyline Collection paid homage to the skyline of her home in New York.

Also in this category is the aptly named "Color Me Vivid"  Collection from Joan Park with its colorful and distinctly Bollywood feel - this was a very consumer friendly collection.

Rio Tinto hopes that retailers will not only purchase these lines for their stores but that they will inspire them to create their own "Stories".

Part Two of this story will cover the Mines - the presentation at LUXURY gave a rare glimpse into the actual mining process.

‘Fancy Royals’ collection by Royal Asscher®
Honors The "House Of Orange"

Earlier this year, to honor the coronation of King Willem-Alexander, Royal Asscher® launched a grand, new jewelry collection. The aptly named ‘Fancy Royals’ collection is set with the most lively orange diamonds and sapphires in honor of the Dutch Royal family (The House of Orange).

The line features three unique rings available in 18 carat gold set with orange and white diamonds and silver with orange sapphires and white diamonds. Prices start at  $2.575

Over the years, Royal Asscher® has always had a close knit relationship with various Royal families throughout the world.

In 1908 the Asscher brothers from Amsterdam cut the biggest diamond in the world: the Cullinan. The Cullinan I (530cts) was so large that 9 sizeable diamonds were cut from it and mounted in the cross of the Scepter, the Cullinan II (317crts) is mounted in St. Edward's Crown. Both are part of the Royal Crown Jewels and on permanent display in the Tower of London.

In 1980 Her Majesty Queen Juliana of the Netherlands granted the Asscher Diamond Company the Royal title as acknowledgment to both the company and family's leading role in the diamond industry. In 2011 this Royal title was extended for another 25 years so in honoring the House of Orange they also pay homage to their own history.

GIA Exhibits at Africa Education Week for the First Time
Institute introduces 1,000+ students to gem education

More than 1,000 African students were introduced to gem and jewelry education opportunities at the Career Indaba trade show in Johannesburg, June 20-22, as part of the seventh annual Africa Education Week. GIA (Gemological Institute of America) exhibited at the event for the first time, building on its endeavors bringing industry-leading gemological and design education to the nations that produce diamonds and other gems. The Institute’s representatives met with prospective students, handing out education materials and discussing gemology and jewelry program options.

GIA, a global independent organization dedicated to ensuring the public trust in gems and jewelry through research, education and laboratory services, was the only organization of its kind to exhibit at Career Indaba. Attendees learned that a passion for gems and a keen eye are the two most important prerequisites to embark on an education with the Institute, which offers courses in diamonds, colored gems, pearls and jewelry design.

“GIA was new and exciting to the students, and responses about our education programs have been pouring in since the event,” said Elizabeth Bokaba, GIA’s manager of alumni and client relations in South Africa. “Africa Education Week is an outstanding opportunity to reach students who wish to enrich their studies. We absolutely plan to return in the future.”

Since 2008, GIA has expanded its presence in Africa, opening two full-time laboratories and offering classes in Gaborone and Johannesburg, establishing partnerships with government agencies and universities throughout the continent, and maintaining a global network of active alumni. Today, there are more than 800 alumni and two GIA Alumni Chapters in Africa.

Many students and schools were also interested in GIA’s Junior Gemologist Program™, which gives students from ages of 10-15 the opportunity to discover the world of gemology through hands-on, practical training. Plans are currently underway to expand the program, which was introduced to Africa in 2012.

More is More: Tony Duquette & Hutton Wilkinson Jewelry to Go On Exhibit
Iconic pieces to be featured at GIA’s World Headquarters in California

CARLSBAD, Calif. – July 16, 2013 – More than fifty emblematic jewelry creations by Hollywood design legends Tony Duquette and Hutton Wilkinson make up the duos’ first-ever all-jewelry exhibit, “More is More: Tony Duquette - Hutton Wilkinson Jewelry,” which debuts on Oct. 10 at GIA’s (Gemological Institute of America) world headquarters in Carlsbad, CA. The acclaimed body of work, which will be on display through March 2014, embraces a wide variety of styles, periods and palettes often showcasing unusual gemstones paired with rare materials in whimsical designs.

“Duquette and Wilkinson’s jewelry make a show-stopping statement. Someone wearing these pieces would not go unnoticed,” said Terri Ottaway, curator of the GIA Museum. “It is amazing to see the unusual gemstone choices they made – and astonishing to see how well these unconventional materials work together.”

Duquette – the first and only American to be honored with a one-man show at the Louvre in Paris – worked with business partner and design collaborator Wilkinson for more than 30 years prior to his death in 1999. The Duchess of Windsor, Doris Duke, Buddy Rogers, J. Paul Getty and Elizabeth Arden were among their many famous clients. Their bold and theatrical jewelry designs draw inspiration from their notable work as costume and set designers during the Golden Age of Hollywood. “If it’s not fabulous, it’s meaningless,” Wilkinson has said of their design aesthetic.

“They chose color for inspiration rather than searching for perfection in the gems,” Larry Larson, a gemology instructor at GIA, added. “They always seemed to go for strength rather than the merely pretty.”

Wilkinson continues to create pieces for the “Tony Duquette Collection” using their favorite materials such as malachite, pearls, emerald and coral. Wilkinson describes these jewelry designs as bold, theatrical, extravagant, Byzantine and sometimes even barbaric.

Pieces exhibited are on loan from personal collectors and The Anthony and Elizabeth Duquette Foundation for the Living Arts. “More is More: Tony Duquette - Hutton Wilkinson Jewelry” will be on display from Oct. 10, 2013through March 2014. For more details, visit GIA’s website or call 800-421-7250.

“Floral Wreath” Necklace
The Duchess of Windsor-style necklace is made of citrine, tourmaline and mabe pearl set in 18K gold. Following the1951 exhibit at the Louvre, the Duchess of Windsor commissioned Duquette to make a gold wreath of vines and flowers, which she often wore to evening events. Prior to the debut of this necklace, it was customary to wear only platinum after 5 p.m.

"Homage to Elsie De Wolfe" Jeweled Box
The small lapis lazuli box featuring cameos is a homage to Duquette’s early mentor, Elsie De Wolfe – later Lady Mendl – the “first Lady of Interior Decoration.”

"Imperial Dragon" Cuffs
A pair of antique 18th century carved white jade Foo Dogs set in their original 18K gold enamel are grasped by diamond tipped claws. The 18k gold cuffs feature tsavorite garnet, green tourmaline and citrine. The cuffs represent an eclectic mixture of old and new.

"Dreams of Klimt" Bracelet
Square sugarloaf cut cabochons, tourmaline and diamond.

"Paisley River" Earrings
A pair of carved tourmaline, yellow sapphire and diamond earrings set in 18k gold.

"Othello” Brooch
Ruby, diamond, South Sea cultured pearl and tourmaline blackamore “dressed figures” are a mix of modern and ancient designs.

Evocateur: Gold Leaf Fascination
Designer Barbara Ross-Innamorati ofEvocateur was first inspired by an exhibition of paintings by Expressionist artist Gustav Klimt, which captured her imagination. Since then she says she has been passionate about gold leaf- the way it can transform objects into something almost magical. Each piece is made using a centuries-old gilding technique and burnished by hand. The flecks of 22k gold leaf or silver leaf are added to give the collections a vintage look. The new Humphrey's Safari collection, named after her recent trip to Africa, gives a portion of the proceeds to a school in rural Zimbabwe. Booth #2963

Heather Moore Jewelry Launches Bridal Collection
Heather Moore Jewelry is bringing her new bridal collection to the JA New York Show. Heather was recently awarded first place in the bridal category at the 2013 Couture Design Awards with an engagement ring from her new collection. Inspired by the 13 ladies at her office and studio who are getting married this year, the collection features engagement rings and his and her wedding bands, many of which can be personalized. There are classic and diamond bands available in yellow, white, rose and green gold, as well as palladium. Heather says a baby collection could be next! Booth #3049

Mattioli Unveils the Tibet Collection
Designer Licia Mattioligained inspiration for her new collection from an ancient custom in Tibet. Before a wedding, the mother of the bride fashions a ring for her daughter out of any wiry material that can be found in the village. It can be wire, string or even horse hair. In a sweet ceremony, the mother begins wrapping the material around the bride's finger to create a ring. Every wrap of the material signifies a year of good fortune in the marriage. When Licia learned of this custom in her travels, she declared “I must make this in gold!” The Tibet Collection of rings, earrings, bracelets and pendants are hand-made in 18k gold and each piece represents a wish of well being and prosperity. Sandy Leong: A Commitment That Inspired a Collection

When it comes to jewelry, few pieces are as significant as those given during a proposal or exchanged at a wedding.  Sandy Leong’s  “Commitment” collection celebrates the love and union between two people. And it was a commitment that inspired the collection, which is crafted in 18k gold with diamond accents.

Designer Sandy Leong was prompted to create the collection when a friend asked her to custom make a piece for he and his loved one. She turned to nature, a theme throughout her collections, for inspiration, as well as the joy in the people and places that make life so special. The natural earth-like texture in the collection demonstrates an important value that  Sandy Leong seeks to infuse into every piece she hand crafts in New York: giving back to our planet.
With her “Commitment” collection, Sandy Leong hopes to bring the warmth, sincerity and uniqueness of her friend’s union to other couples. She has always felt fortunate, since starting her jewelry career, to be able to spread her passion to others. The story and inspiration behind one of her favorite collections is rivaled only by what it represents at its core, the love between two people.

At this year’s gala, we congratulated the deserving individuals and organizations honored, and celebrated the rich history of WJA’s first 30 years by presenting special Swarovski-commissioned trophies to all our past and current presidents.”

GIA Collaborates with the Nelson Mandela Foundation
to Provide Libraries to Elementary Schools
Gem institute supports foundation’s work in Africa

The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory at the Nelson Mandela Foundation and GIA (Gemological Institute of America)  have signed a Memo of Understanding (MoU) to provide four elementary schools in South Africa with Mandela Day Libraries.

The MoU supports the legacy of Nelson Mandela to ensure sustainability through transformative democracy. The collaboration will support literacy as an empowerment tool and one of the single most important skills for children, providing them with access to further education and life opportunities.

Susan M. Jacques, chair of the GIA Board of Governors, and Sello K. Hatang, Chief Executive  of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, met in Carlsbad, CA last month to enact the agreement.

Sello Hatang, Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, and Susan Jacques, chair of the GIA Board of Governors, sign a Memorandum of Understanding between GIA and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
The Mandela Day libraries project began in 2011 with the goal of bridging the gap in literacy and reading proficiency in schools throughout South Africa. By bringing libraries to schools without reading facilities, children gain access to appropriate reading material in their own languages. Librarians are trained to manage the facilities and inspire a love of reading among South Africa’s youth. GIA will provide libraries to two schools in 2013 and two more in 2014.

The Mandela Day Container Libraries are created from large shipping containers that have been recycled and retrofitted with new flooring, insulation, electricity and book shelves. The Institute will also provide a selection of books for each library. Breadline Africa, a nongovernmental organization and internationally registered South African-based charity, is the main partner of the container program.

“We are excited about our new collaboration with GIA. It will present many pupils with an opportunity to improve their literacy and ultimately their lives. Literacy remains an enormous challenge in  Africa and is a key priority on the youth agenda,” added Hatang.

Sello Hatang, Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, right, speaks with Bev Hori, GIA’s chief learning officer and vice president of education during a special luncheon last month.
“We’re looking forward to growing our relationship with the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The first phase of this collaboration will establish libraries in towns where children are underprivileged,” said Bev Hori, GIA’s chief learning officer and vice president of education. “This will be the first time some of these students have had access to books. The Mandela Day Container Libraries are an excellent step in bettering the education, and in turn the lives, of children in Africa.”

GIA has developed education programs in Africa over the past decade to help bring more value from the global trade of diamonds to the countries that are the source of so many gems. GIA’s Junior Gemologist Program™, which gives 10-15-year-old students the opportunity to discover the world of gemology through hands-on, practical training, was introduced in Africa in 2012. The Institute also introduced more than 1,000 African students to gem and jewelry education opportunities at the Career Indaba trade show in Johannesburg in June as part of the seventh annual Africa Education Week

Elizabeth Bokaba, GIA's manager of Alumni and Client Relations in South Africa, speaks during a luncheon for Sello Hatang, Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

JCK's LUXURY Privé New York and Press Events Illuminate Manhattan
A Series of Exclusive Events Showcase over 65 Luxury Jewelry Collections in
Time for Holiday 2013 & Allow for Matchmaking at It's Best

JCK Events held their 3rd annual LUXURY Privé New York show earlier this week at the luxurious Pierre Hotel. The event brought a new designer balcony featuring the most coveted brands, played matchmaker between upscale retailers and exhibitors and introduced scores of media to the collections just in time for the holiday.

With a roster of the nation's top stores in attendance, including Underwoods, FL; Lux Bond & Green, CT; Lee Michaels Jewelers, LA; R.F. Moeller Jewelers, MN; Mednikow Jewelers, TN; Long's Jewelers, MA; Cornell Jewelers, NY; Gleim the Jeweler, CA, the mood was vibrant and buying was at a record high. In spite of all that took place, however, the confines of Privé remained a relaxed and intimate atmosphere to conduct business amidst the chaos of New York Jewelry week.

The LUXURY Privé New York experience began with a decadent welcome event, a Gatsby-themed cocktail party at the Pierre, setting the tone for the 3-day long show. Monday's show began with the 'Meet the Retailer/Meet the Designer' matchmaking event and seminar facilitated by The Edge Retail Academy's Becka Johnson Kibby.

Following the useful tips and introductions, retailers got down to business, visiting the salons and selecting merchandise for the all-important holiday season. The new 'Designer Balcony', was a particularly alluring destination, featuring collections from newcomers Lisa Black, Ed Levin and Meredith Marks. Also new, Stephanie Kantis' selection of showstoppers drew much attention; while BG Art Jewelry's unique stackable bands were a huge hit for their gift-ability.

Karen Goracke and Amy Dudzik from Borsheims, attending their first Privé show, remarked on the overall ease of the show and the great variety of brands represented. "The show has a stress free vibe, making it easy to find brands you might ordinarily miss at the larger shows. We missed Ed Levin at the JCK show but were happy to have found him at Privé. We also fell in love with Stephanie Kantis' collection of fine designer, yet reasonably-priced, fashion jewelry. The trip was definitely worth our while and we're already looking forward to next year."

From the brand side, many exhibitors gave testament to the strength of the show, relationships and buying atmosphere:

Jack O'Neil of Spark Creations commented, "We had a great show which should lead to an exciting end of this year. Retailers had confidence in the economy and are buying more color as a result."

Ray Mastoloni of pearl powerhouse, Mastoloni Pearls shared "Wonderful show! It was a great experience. We opened a number of new accounts in addition to seeing some old 'friends'. Some retailers were finishing up what was started in Vegas; this show gave them the perfect opportunity to work in a more relaxed environment, which was conducive to doing great business."

As if the excitement on the salon floor wasn't enough, JCK's adjacent press events brought brands face to face with key media contacts who were actively working holiday jewelry stories. Brands such as Temple St. Clair, Rina Limor and Denise James sent in merchandise for the 'Iced Tea' blogger and editor events. Top jewelry and fashion bloggers attended the morning portion of the July 30thevents, sipping tea while ogling 'iced' creations and ultimately selecting their top picks for an on-site photo shoot. Editors from the jewelry industry's leading publications, as well as fashion, luxury and lifestyle books, perused the collections in the afternoon, noting the trends for Holiday 2013 and earmarking selections for gift guides.

At day's end, 10 bloggers, including iDazzle, Ms. Fabulous and Diamonds in the Library, and 30 editors from Vogue to Martha Stewart Weddings, had attended.

In addition to the Privé show and its unique press events, JCK was pleased to work closely with both the Women's Jewelry Association and the American Gem Society on their own events throughout the week; WJA's Awards for Excellence Dinner and AGS's Circle of Distinction Dinner.

LUXURY Privé New York closed on Wednesday with strong buying and a robust media presence. Contracts for 2014 are already underway and the unique show will host its next event in Panama City next month with LUXURY Privé Panama.
